Choose The Light
CHOOSE THE LIGHT:
This song comes from 2 Nephi 1-4 when Lehi is offering his last testimony and blessing his children before he dies. I leaned heavily on 2 Nephi 2, when Lehi is counseling Jacob (who incidentally becomes the next prophet after Nephi) he tells him to follow his brother Nephi and he would be just fine. He talks about opposition in all things as well as freedom and accountability and he urges his son to choose eternal life.
Choose the Light is the first song in this series that teaches actual doctrine. One of my personal beliefs is that God sent his son, Jesus Christ, to pay for my sins because He values freedom of choice over all things. Everything that He does and teaches is to protect our freedom of choice so that we can discover who we are and choose him.
The chapter heading summarizes this teaching beautifully: "Redemption comes through the Holy Messiah—Freedom of choice (agency) is essential to existence and progression—Adam fell that men might be—Men are free to choose liberty and eternal life."
Lehi's urge to choose the light echoes God's voice. He doesn't command us to choose the light. He begs for us to choose the light so we can return to live with Him. And he emphasizes that we will be most happy if we choose the light.
Because this is Nephi's father and he is nearing the end of his life, I chose a softer, loving tone for Lehi's message. I chose Lauren Daigle's song "You Say" as my pattern for this song. With a male voice, I felt like this would represent him well.
