He Will Answer You
HE WILL ANSWER YOU:
This is the capstone message of the Book of Mormon and comes from the final words of Moroni in the book of Moroni, chapter 10. The most important truth found in the Book of Mormon is that God hears and answers our prayers and that He will let you know the truth (found in Moroni 10:3-5). Moroni's promise is the foundation of the doctrine of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.
Long before translating the Book of Mormon, Joseph Smith was trying to discover which church he should join. He attended multiple different congregations and spoke with the leaders of each of them. He felt overwhelmed by their arguments to the point that he felt an appeal to the Bible for answers was insufficient. But he believed in God and wanted to be baptized, so he kept looking for the truth.
One night, while he was reading in the book of James, verse five of chapter one jumped out at him. It read, "If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him." Of this passage, Joseph said (see Joseph Smith History 1:12), "Never did any passage of scripture come with more power to the heart of man than this did at this time to mine. It seemed to enter with great force into every feeling of my heart. I reflected on it again and again, knowing that if any person needed wisdom from God, I did."
It was because he decided to follow the instructions of this scripture that he received what we refer to as The First Vision. Joseph Smith saw The Father and The Son and spoke with them. God the Father said, pointing to Jesus, "This is My Beloved Son. Hear Him!"
Jesus explained that none of the churches at the time were true. He said (see Joseph Smith History 1:19), "they draw near to me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me, they teach for doctrines the commandments of men, having a form of godliness, but they deny the power thereof." He was commanded at the time that he should not join himself with any of those churches and that he should wait for further instructions.
I imagine that when Joseph got to the end of translating the Book of Mormon and came across the passage in Moroni, now known as Moroni's Promise, he felt a certain sense of completion. Not only was this the promise that had led him to the truth, but it was further confirmation that the promise in the bible was true. The Book of Mormon is referred to as Another Testament of Jesus Christ and it provides clarity and confirmation of the teachings in the Bible.
Moroni's promise is specifically about the Book of Mormon, and it is generally about anything that comes from God. As missionaries, we teach that you don't have to take our word for it. If you really want to know, you can pray to know the truth and God will answer you.
I know that this is true. I've read the Book of Mormon many times and I've prayed about its truth. I received an answer. And you can too.
